Composite Bonding is a Minimally invasive Treatment performed by Dentists which uses Tooth coloured Resin material to create the look of a more even smile. This can be achieved using a variety of techniques, such as edge Bonding (Resin used to build up chipped, cracked or worn teeth) or full Bonding (similar to the way veneers are placed, covering the whole of the tooth surface.) Full Bonding is a great option if the desired look is to change the shape of the tooth, either by making it longer in length or a little wider to close small gaps in between the teeth. It can also be used to improve the colour of teeth and is the most less invasive option to correct some minor cosmetic issues.
Over time, composites can start to stain, and possibly chip at the edges, but each individual case varies depending on how much bonding has been carried out. Your dentist will advise you on the best way to keep your new smile in great shape and keeping up with a good dental hygiene regime, you will find they could last as long as 10 years.
Composite Bonding in most cases can be completed in a single dental visit and because the treatment is minimally invasive and pain-free, this means no need for any Local Anaesthetic. Your consultation will have already been carried out and your treatment plan mapped out in preparation for this visit. Your Dentist will have discussed shades with you for your desired look before starting.
When applying the composite Resin, the tooth surfaces will need to be prepared, by slightly roughening the surface using a special Gel. This allows for the for Resin to Bond to the natural tooth.
The Resin will be applied either using a special stent with the shape of the new teeth as a guide, or this can be done free hand. The Resin is then set and hardened using a UV Curing light.
Unfortunately, Composite Resin will not whiten, Only the natural tooth. It is advisable if you wish to whiten your teeth, to complete a course of Teeth Whitening to your desired shade before having Composites placed and we would then match the Composite resin to your final shade.
Composite Bonding for the treatment itself, Ranges from around £100-£250 depending on how much material is used.
